Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 160 Review

Hummingbird PiranhaMax 160

PiranhaMax 160

One of the very simple and easy to use models, the Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 160 is also quite an inexpensive one. And in this case being “cheap” doesn’t mean low grade. Although it doesn’t have a wide range of features, this fish finder does it’s job smoothly if used according to its specs.

The Hummingbird PiranhaMax 160 is quite a small unit, has a 4 inches diagonal screen, 4 level grayscale, with a pixel resolution of 160 x 128. Although the display is black and white, the images are really easy to read and interpret. When it locates fish, you’ll always know their depth, and it will also present you with a pretty good view of the bottom structure and contour.

The PiranhaMax 160 is equipped with a Dual Beam sonar, which works fine up to 600 ft. It can operate in two modes: 200 kHz, launching a 20° beam, which will provide you with a more condensed but accurate return, and 83 kHz with a wider sonic beam of 60°.

This small fish finder does not have any navigational capabilities, Side Imaging or Down Imaging, but it’s a nice piece of electronic fishing equipment for tracking fish for the price, excellent choice for the recreational fisherman.

Like all the other Hummingbird fish finders, the PiranhaMax 160 comes with a one year warranty.

Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 230 Portable Review

Hummingbird PiranhaMax 230 Portable

PiranhaMax 230 Portable

The Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 230 Portable is one of the most appreciated fish finders in the PiranhaMax series, due to its excellent price/quality ratio.

Although it’s equipped only with a black and white screen, 4-inches in diagonal with a pixel resolution of 160V x 132H, it’s a very flexible unit, and that’s why many anglers choose it over the other models.

It’s endowed with a DualBeam sonar, providing you with two scanning modes: a beam of 20° for more accurate returns, and a beam with an opening of 60° for a wider coverage of water. However, it’s important to know that this fish finder works properly only on trolling speed. Once you speed up, the information displayed on the screen won’t be as accurate.

The fish caught by the 20° beam will appear on the screen colored in black, they should be situated directly under the transducer, and the ones caught by the 60° beam show up colored in white. It also displays the depth of each fish that appears on the screen, information very useful to any angler.

The sonar is designed to track fish in waters up to 600 feet deep.

The Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 230 Portable can also be equipped with an additional 90° beam, wireless transducer which can be used successfully in waters with a depth up to 120 ft.

Even though it’s a small unit, it has a great wattage, going up to 800 Watts PTP power output.

All in all, the Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 230 Portable is a great unit to have, especially if you don’t own a boat, or wherever you need to rent a boat. It provides excellent results for ice fishing. You don’t even need to place the transducer in the water, just put it on the ice and it will read for you what’s underneath.

So, if you’re looking for a low cost, yet effective and flexible Hummingbird fish finder, the PiranhaMax 230 Portable is something that you should put on your list.

Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 190c Review

Hummingbird PiranhaMax 190c

PiranhaMax 190c

The PiranhaMax series of Hummingbird fish finders includes pretty cheap, yet very useful fish finder models. Although none of the units in this series have navigational options, they are quite excellent tools for finding fish.

The Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 190c is one of the most popular units in this series. Although it doesn’t have Down Imaging or Side Imaging you’ll still benefit from a very clear image of the bottom contour, structures or sunken objects, and of course, game fish or bait clouds.

It has only a Single Beam sonar, which emits a 20° beam which is quite reliable in waters up to 800 ft. deep. The power output of the Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 190c goes up to 1600 Watts PTP, which is not bad at all. Up to 800 ft. you will get very clear returns.

The display of this Hummingbird fish finder is 256 color TFT, with LED backlight which gives it great readability either it’s a rainy day, the sun is bright, or you’re out for a night fishing session. The screen is not extremely wide, but a 3.5 inch diagonal, with a 320 x 240 pixel resolution is just about right for this fishfinder’s modest price.

All in all, the Hummingbird Fish Finder PiranhaMax 190c is a piece of electronic fishing equipment which for a fair price does its job, enabling you to find the big ones you’re looking for every time you’re out on water.

By the way, amazon.com has the wrong picture for this product there. The Humminbird Piranhamax 190c Amazon page has the photo of the Humminbird Piranhamax 180 model. Don’t worry, they will send you the right product, if you’re going to make a purchase.
